So our house was built in the 1950's and it has that lovely pink tile in the bathroom. It is all basically in very good shape and we don't want to go through the expense of completely remodeling our bathroom. Plus since it is our only bathroom we would have to be on vacation or staying in a hotel when it is done. We decided that a spruce up and coordinating color change was in order.
The off white that was on the walls was just not doing enough to tone down the pink with baby blue border. Since our home is a Cape Cod style house and we are close to the water Kim suggested a beach theme and colors which of course will go well with the existing pink and blue.
Simple enough, right? We just need to take the time to clean everything out, prime, paint, put back and we are done. Not so fast...
I was cleaning out and got to taking down the mirror/medicine cabinet and this is what I found!
Apparently the former owners had one of those, oh so stylish, recessed medicine cabinets with vanity lights on either side. I do have to say that I am glad that it was replaced before we bought the house. However, I wish that they had at least taken the time to fix the holes. Ugh! To top it off they left uncapped live wires sitting in the walls. Double Ugh!
So I filled...
And I patched...
And I repaired the hole and primed the walls...
Now we are ready for paint, a new mirror and light fixture, new shower rod, caulking and some fresh accessories.
Check back for bathroom updates. I think the final product will be really nice.
Our Home, Garden and the Journey of Maintenance and Improvement

In the beginning
Hi, I'm John. My wife, Kim, and I consider ourselves creative and self reliant people. Over the last year or two we have been discussing ways to simplify and do more things ourselves. Kim is very crafty with card making, scrapbooking and other craft related things. So with her skills in arranging and working with color she is taking the lead with the arranging and color choices inside the house (although I do give my opinion a lot). I like digging in the dirt, getting my hands dirty and finding ways of doing things for less (Kim might admit that I am a little tight fisted, I like to think of it as being frugal and reusing things when we can). So I am taking care of a lot of the gardening duties and heavy lifting.
This blog will be about us sharing our journey of improving and maintaining our home and garden. Why do this? Well we would like to be able to share with family and friends what is going on and we love seeing before and afters on TV and magazines. It is exciting and a great way to get ideas, so why not share our befores and afters with the world.
The first few posts will probably be some completed or almost completed projects, but then it will be all new.
